The Bitter Truth & Tiki Lovers Rum are proud to announce a Special Edition of our rum range in collaboration with the Museum Fünf Kontinente in Munich. The museum was founded in 1862 as the first ethnological museum in Germany, and they are currently showing an exhibition that is close to our hearts. It is called „TIKIMANIA“ and will be running until the end of February 2021.
„TIKIMANIA“ is showcasing the works of German painter Bernd Zimmer who traveled to the Marquesas Islands and created paintings and sculptures inspired by his journey.
The well-curated presentation focuses on the relationship between Oceanic and European culture. Curator Dr. Hilke Thode-Arora expands the artist’s personal view with rare artifacts of the museum and historical documents that explore the interplay between the two cultures.
The museum further invited author and expert Sven Kirsten to contribute an outlook on how the South Seas got romanticized in the last mid-century and lead to Tiki pop culture.
Tikimania offers a good starting point to reflect on real origins and outside fantasy. An important dialogue for the future.
For this special occasion, Tiki Lovers Rum created together with Los Angeles-based designer Michael Uhlenkott a set of new labels for our range of rum blends. White, Dark, and Pineapple now shine in traditional Tapa prints that go back to the archives of German Explorer Karl von den Steinen (1855-1929) who traveled and thoroughly documented the art and crafts of the Marquesas Islands. Parts of his documents rest in the Museum Fünf Kontinente and link this label design to the exhibition.
